Hathway
Hathway Avenue was named for Dr. Amos Riley Hathway, an outstanding citizen of our community. He was a direct descendant of Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, but dropped the middle "a" from his name (this information is still unproven). Dr. and Mrs. Hathway came to San Luis Obispo from Kentucky in 1874 with their children and built a beautiful Victorian home on what is now Grove Street. The 1880 federal census lists him as living at 170 North Monterey Street.
Check out this image of Amos R. Hathway and family standing on the yard in front of their house. The house is a large two-story structure with two wings, small porches above the bay windows, and two ground-level porches with empty trellises in front. Distinctive blocks line the right-angle corners of the house. Left to Right Mary Hathway, Camden Hathway, Hal Hathway, Anita Hathway, (holding her father's hand) Dr. Amos Riley Hathway, Ella Hathway, Mrs. Amos Riley Hathway, and Kate Hathway.
