Sandercock

William Sandercock was born February 27th, 1848 in Chicago and came to California by ox team with his parents. He was one of the first contractors in California and was a sub-contractor during construction of the Southern Pacific railroad over the mountains, through San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara.

William was the first registered student of Heald's Business College, from which he graduated 1868. He paid for his scholarship by killing and marketing wild game.

In 1872 he established the Sandercock Transfer Company, the oldest family owned business in San Luis Obispo.

William quickly saw opportunity and expanded his business by hauling almost anything and everything. Over the next 20 years Mr. Sandercock would grow his business to include more than 300 horses and mules, including the famous 20 mule team.

Here are a couple pictures from the companies past.

William Sandercock died at the age of 85, and is buried in the San Luis Obispo Cemetery, plot OM-B3.
